Conclusion for the prop package:

-       For those people who prefer outdoor activities, they like to have the surrounding to have fresh air, green scenery and not to be affected by the weather

-       For those people who prefer indoor activities, they like to be in a high-class surrounding or have a lot of facilities to do their activities

-       There are people who walk to take mrt from their house rather than take bus to mrt

-       Girls usually go for shopping as their activities while guys usually go to arcade as their activities

Week 2 – Research

November 1, 2009 at 12:56 pm (IDES)

Interview with Hui Mei who has experience as a full pledge staff nurse and has now studying advance nursing.
Here are some of the questions asked:
1) How is your job experience? Name a few meaningful or problematic ones. (State the name of the hospital)
I remember when I started passing out as a full pledge staff nurse, it was not an easy journey for me as I need to adjust to my work shift and picking up as a new staff, there are many new things to learn. It was fulfilling especially when you see a patient discharge back home.
Of course there was time whereby there are patient who are difficult to handle. I encountered one patient, he kept wanting to be discharge but however he was not well yet, thus not be able to go home. So he tried all means to run away from the hospital,  a lot of times we caught him back. But unfortunately, during one of my duty, he ran out and was not able to find him back. Then in the end i need to write incident report and report to police.

2) What is your perspective of those people/elderly who has weak muscles?
People who have weak muscles in elderly people, usually they do not have much motivation to exercise or compliant to activity especially for those who do not have loved ones to accompany or give them support. It really depends on the individual and their past history. e.g if they are a person who had a determine personality, they usually are more active in participating in the exercise/ task given to them.

3) Do you have any experience based on these kind of patients? If yes, what is their facilities like or training room like to help these patients?
There was a daycare rehabilitation center for these group of people. Usually they will get their caregiver to be involved in the activities and exercises. There are various activities for them to work on, some are to train their fine motor function or cycling etc.

Week 1 – research

October 25, 2009 at 3:59 pm (IDES)

After much discussion with the group members, we decided to focus our attentions to the hospital beds.

*  http://www.elder-abuse-information.com/news/news_060906_hospital_beds.htm

There are incidents of patients caught, entangled or trapped in hospital beds. Bed rail design has been a problem for some nursing homes and hospitals. Nursing home residents who are confused, in acute pain, or with uncontrolled body movements or urinary problems may try to exit a bed during the night. If the patient tries to climb over or through the bed rail, he or she may fall or become caught in the rail.

HBSG also suggested some ways to prevent injuries.

Notes for the design: eliminating the use of physical restraints in nursing home

The hospital bed has many entrapment areas which are stated in this website. There are also motorized hospital beds which have an increased fire risk – due to the possibility of electrical shorts, overheating or materials falling into the motor casing. Not all mattresses or bed rails are suitable with any given bed frame. There is also some safety tips for the hospital beds.

Definition of the hospital bed : A bed becomes a hospital bed when it meets the requirements for being a medical device

Notes for the design: Do not be too complex

Another article about the hospital bed side rails. It talks about the safety measured needed. Bed side rails should not be used as a substitute for patient protective restraints. Patients who need a protective restraint, such as a vest or wrist/leg device, must be monitored frequently while wearing it.

*  http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/DeviceRegulationandGuidance/GuidanceDocuments/ucm072662.htm#1

A very detailed article about potential life-threatening entrapment associated with hospital bed systems and ways to reducing them.

It is a hospital bed for children. It was made to create effiency between the children and the adults.
